Before: Outdated KitchenIn 1979 Dani and Algis Ratkelis built their family dream home along the coastline of Southern California. Twenty five years later, the kids are grown and gone and the couple have decided that what looked great in the '70s does not look as great now, so they hope to update their kitchen/family space using a $65,000 budget to make it a more contemporary and useful room for their current lifestyle.
After: Contemporary-Style KitchenTaking into consideration all three plans, the Ratkelis decide to use the expertise of Sharron Fashempour, who plans to open up the two rooms and use cabinetry to tie them together. Raising the ceiling really opens up the space, and granite countertops and neutral walls add a contemporary look to the rooms. When Fashempour finishes, the homowners have a modern kitchen/family room with a touch of tradition.
