Operational Home Office

An organizer pro helps one family establish a functional yet comfortable workspace.

Sharon and Steve Hockstein moved into Steve's childhood home nine years ago. It was here that they also launched a successful business from a home office. Since then, the business has moved on, but their old stomping ground has not. These days it looks like a disaster area and dumping ground, littered with tons of clothes, paper and books.

They are ready to reclaim their space and have turned to professional organizer Pam Socolow for help. The goal is to keep the designation as an office, but also allow room for guests to stay. With this in mind, Socolow lays out her plan. She emphasizes the importance of making the space multifunctional, which means bringing in new furniture pieces and office equipment as well as making use of the vertical space.

To create color in the room, she chooses a pale green and warm sand color to paint the walls. She also wants to change out the carpets and replace the oversize ceiling fan with a streamlined light fixture.

The Hocksteins' new space is finally in working order. Before, the room was overflowing with paper, clothes and furniture, but now it is a functional office and guest room for the whole family to enjoy.
