Colorful Living and Dining Room

Host Joan Steffend and designer Kim Wahl add a colorful modern country look to a bland white living and dining room for $500.

  • This bland living room is in need of a touch of style.
  • In the living room, four yellow rectangles are painted on the wall behind the sofa and enhanced with an inspirational word painted in each.
  • Designers plan to add a country modern style to the white dining room.
  • A casual plaid design is painted on with a wide brush on the lower part of the dining room walls. The brush is used as a spacer between each painted stripe for uniformity.
  • Pretty flowers are painted over the top of the plaid design in the dining room.
  • A garage-sale shelf, wood squares and salvaged lumber are combined into a faux fireplace. An application of a sand and paint mixture gives the entire piece textural effect. Wahl makes a pair of topiaries for the mantel.
  • Ready-made panels are embellished with red trim at the top. Floral fabric is stitched onto the bottom.
  • An old cupboard door and pegs are fashioned into a cup holder in the dining room. A red rooster adds a decorative touch on the buffet.
  • A pair of red cotton lows are enhanced with a painted floral design (Wahl uses leftover latex paint). © 2010 Scripps Networks, L.L.C. All rights reserved
