Before: Devoid of ColorHost Kristan Cunningham takes a look at the room to determine the design direction. Currently the room is devoid of color, style and furniture. The space has a skylight in the galvanized metal ceiling, but is too dark in the evening. The wrought-iron roof supports are an eyesore and need to be disguised.
After: Balinese-Inspired SunroomHere's how the design team creates a completely new look in the lackluster sunroom:
The walls are painted a fiery copper color to serve as the dramatic background to the exotic furnishings and accessories.
Modern PillarsCunningham disguises dated support beams with modern-looking pillars made out of pine 1x4s. She cuts the pieces to size and stains them dark walnut. One-inch aluminum angle is attached to the edges of the boards to create the casing for the plastic diffusion panels. White holiday lights are woven through the existing beams and the panels are secured in front.
Antique BoxDesign coordinator Dave Sheinkopf purchases an antique African blanket box to reinforce the exotic theme. It also serves as both storage and seating.
Overhead LightingDesign coordinator Spencer Anderson creates a unique overhead lighting solution using very thin sheets of cold rolled steel. He stabilizes each piece of steel with a 1x2 pine frame, which also allows the pieces to be hung from the ceiling. Fluorescent lights are placed on top of each piece of steel. The steel panels diffuse the daylight streaming in through the skylight, help to coordinate with the corrugated metal ceiling, and at night, the fluorescent lights provide an additional light source.
Chaise SeatingAn upholstered chaise and cushioned cane chair provide more seating in the room.
AccessoriesAccessories include the homeowner's existing black and white tropical-patterned throw pillows, black and white patterned pottery, modern-style table lamp, white wall sconce and tropical plants. A tiered storage unit fills up one corner and provides more room for small accessories and framed photos. Area rugs are layered to reinforce the exotic feel.
