John and Deborah Derzy love their house but are uncertain about how to warm up the family room. They are hoping an expert can remedy the situation.
Before: Cold Family Room
Seven years ago, John and Deborah Derzy, their two daughters and their houseful of pets, including four birds, moved into a contemporary 3,300-square-foot home in Phoenix, Ariz. The Derzys love the house and its open floor plan, but when it comes to their large family room, the central gathering spot, they are uncertain about how to warm it up and tie it together with the rest of the house. They are hoping an expert can remedy the situation and help them create a casually elegant room perfect for relaxing and entertaining.
After: Cozy and Elegant
After careful consideration, the Derzys fall in love with the architectural details of Alicia Prechtel's design and decide on her plan for the space. A neutral paint color on the walls envelops the space to create a soft, warm feeling while splashes of red in the niches above the stairs help add character and color. The new mantel, bird shelves, bookshelves and window valances tie in with the dark wood theme of the new coffee and console tables as well as the entertainment center and breakfast nook. These are all offset by the cream chenille fabric of the sofa and loveseat, which help to enhance the cozy elegance that defines the room.
Lighting is enhanced with a new ceiling fan in the family room, a new chandelier above the breakfast nook and accent lights in the painted niches above the stairs. Finally, the decorative iron window covers, along with the complementary artwork above the fireplace, create an artistic focal point that adds a subtle and unique flavor.
