Today's furniture is getting down. From platform beds to low sofas, home decor hits a new low:
A standard sofa seat height is about 18 inches and higher, while a low-profile seat height is anything under 18 inches (often 15). Lower furniture means that you will have to lower your artwork a few inches to lessen the gap between the furniture and the piece.
- Designer Lori Gayman explains that many sofa seats today are only 15 inches off the ground, instead of the traditional 18 inches, and platform beds are going as low as 11 inches. This low furniture can actually make your room look larger because it makes the ceiling appear higher.
- It's preferable to keep the scale of low-profile furniture the same. Mixing high and low within a seating group could mean trouble, but in the rest of the room, it's great to have different levels for more interest.
