Tiki Chic

Even if you don't live in the tropics, you can still give you home a tiki chic look.

Tropical Living
Do you want to live in the tropics? Well, the next best thing is the tiki chic look and Susan Hable Smith explains how to bring island flair into your home:

Bamboo window shades have been glued onto the walls to give a small room "Big Island" style.

Smith believes that more and more, the idea of an escape to a tropical paradise means stepping inside your own home. Many of the ideas to add the tiki chic touch are simple.

Designer Kevin Burns helps Angie Rooney bring the tropical feel to her urban loft:

Before: Simple Loft
Everything about this loft — from its style to its color palette — is simple and that's the problem. Homeowner Angie Rooney wants to turn her urban loft into a tropical paradise using tiki chic style.

After: Tropical Paradise
Burns uses a sophisticated take on tiki chic to add island touches including orchids, a sand-colored chair slipcover and interesting textures like hyacinth floor pillows.

Makeover Items:

white frames for shelves (Pottery Barn)
bamboo room divider, orchid, starfish poster and frame (IKEA)
sand-colored ultrasuede slipcover (Bed, Bath and Beyond)
bamboo lamp, tiki birdhouse, Oceans candle, banana leaves, snake grass (Pier 1 Imports)
grass green tablecloth, hyacinth floor pillows, natural votive holders (Crate & Barrel)
cigar-shaped tribal mask (Marshall's)
pillows (wool felt sand dollar, wool felt seaweed, linen dune fig on oyster, linen honey aspen on wheat and linen bamboo stripes) (Hable Construction)

Before: Uninteresting Space
Since they were married in Hawaii, Rooney would like to surprise her husband with a tiki chic makeover to remind them of that special time with mementos from their trip.

After: Colorful Dining and Living Areas
A green tablecloth and woven place mats set the stage for the colorful tableware and coconut mugs picked up on the couple's trip. A bamboo screen defines the dining area a bit.
