Chinoiserie Living Room

Chinese and European design elements transform a lifeless living room into a space with a designer look.

Inspiration Room: $100,000

The Inspiration Room

Host Brooke Channon and designer Linda Applewhite work together to re-create the look of Applewhite’s Inspiration Room. Applewhite used a combination of Chinese and European design elements to create this designer look.

Makeover Room, before

The Makeover Room

Guest designer Linda Applewhite helped direct the transformation of a lifeless living room into a charming and vibrant space by taking the following steps:

  • Added a warm buttery yellow (Benjamin Moore: Kansas Grain) to the walls. Hung bright red and gold draperies to add bold color to the room.

  • The design team applied a stone-like faux finish to the stark white mantel to add warmth and texture to the room.

  • Placed a rug with an open pattern and warm colors on the floor.

  • Placed a console table in front of the draperies. The table was dressed with imported Chinese lamps and red accented accessories to complement the draperies.

  • Used a chenille damask sofa decorated with handmade chinoiserie pillows.

  • Added a chinoiserie tray-style table topped with an ornate container with beaded fruit.

  • Placed a reproduction bombe chest next to the console table and topped it with a Chinese vase.

  • Hung two whimsical floral paintings on either side of the console table to add interest to the area.

  • Added chairs upholstered in damask to flank either side of the sofa. Accented the right side chair with a faux Dalmatian fur footrest and a black octagonal end table.

  • Hung an oval floral relief over the mantel to simulate the look of the Flemish panel found in the Inspiration Room.

  • Decorated the mantel with Chinese themed accessories.

  • The design team stenciled a wood veneer hamper to replicate the look of the African drum in the Inspiration Room, which completed the fireplace area.
