Modern Yellow Living Room

Host Brooke Channon and designer Melissa Wilson work together to re-create the look of Wilson's inspiration room, which is a combination of contemporary style, geometric elements and light-colored furnishings.

Inspiration Room: $32,000

The Inspiration Room
Host Brooke Channon introduces designer Melissa Wilson, who created a clean, crisp living room using an unusual color palette of bright yellow and bluish gray. The furniture has geometric lines, and the repetition of the pattern in the pillows and artwork enhances the geometric look. An Asian sub-theme is evident in the uncluttered accessories and the large-scale, clean-lined coffee table.

Makeover Room, before

Transforming the Makeover Room
Designer Melissa Wilson guided the makeover of a dated living room with a worn-out couch and tired color scheme into a sleek, inviting, and most important, comfortable, room with the following steps:

  • Replaced the worn white couches with a loose pillow-back couch in a warm beige chenille-like fabric.
  • Painted the green walls a cool bluish-gray tone (Benjamin Moore: Boothbay Gray).
  • Placed a large sisal rug over the red concrete floor to help neutralize the color.

  • Made three sets of identical pillows for the couch: a large gray flannel solid, with a gray and white striped smaller pillow in front.
  • Hung two canvases painted with bright yellow geometric shapes copied from the Inspiration Room.
  • Stained a simple black rectangular coffee table a deep walnut.

  • Set a wooden tray of black, white, camel and gray rocks on the table and added a single book to complete the uncomplicated look.
  • Placed a contemporary well-padded chair in a camel fabric next to the sofa.
  • Used a low-scale comfortable chair on the other side of the sofa and added a gray waffle-weave throw.
  • Painted and stained two side tables: a double-tier round table, circa 1960, for one side of the sofa, and an octagonal-shaped table for the other side.

  • Used two lamps with flat white drum shades for the side tables.
