Sleek, Kid-Friendly Modern Kitchen Makeover

A bland kitchen gets a sleek, modern makeover using gray tones and clean lines.

Before: Bland Color Palette

This kitchen and dining areas are bland, boring and in need of a makeover. The homeowners are looking for colors that make the spaces cohesive and represent their urban personalities.

After: Gorgeous Gray

The space has a monochromatic gray theme with stainless steel accents and hints of wood and leather to keep the space welcoming. The family sofa is sleek with clean lines, but still comfortable. Adding two more floor lamps to their existing lighting creates a sculptural effect that has a strong impact on the design. Four pieces of art with a unifying graphic theme, flax-colored curtains and a gray rug complete the space.

Before: Lackluster Design

The homeowners love their home, which is right in the heart of San Francisco, but they’re ready to update the living areas. They want the spaces to be sleek and fun, but comfortable for their young child.

After: Sleek, Modern Kitchen

A unified color scheme is more sophisticated than the former palette. Monochromatic doesn't mean using the same shade over and over; it's about using various shades and tones to create depth. The cabinets are a dark charcoal gray and a stainless steel backsplash is installed. The final result is a modern kitchen that's sleek and kid-friendly.

Design Tips:

  • If choosing gray for your walls, remember that blue-grays are cooler tones, while brown-grays are warmer.
  • Numbering the backs of cabinet doors and their corresponding cabinets before removing them makes re-installation much easier.
  • To change the finish on cabinets, first go over with a liquid etching compound to remove grease, then sand to remove the gloss finish before painting.
