Before: Worn and WearyDarlene Brown and Joe Hartman moved into their house three years. They make it a point to eat dinner together as a family every evening, but their kitchen and dining room leave more than a little something to be desired. Carpenter James Lunday and designer Michelle Carrano will give them new cabinets, wainscoting and custom molding to create three separate yet beautifully coordinated spaces.
The space is poorly laid out; the new fridge partially blocks the entrance from the living room. The cabinets are worn and are falling off their hinges. There is very little counter space and what they do have is overly cluttered.
After: Fun and FunctionalShaker-style cabinets in a light finish paired with stainless-steel appliances give the room a clean and modern look. The refrigerator is moved to the opposite wall to open up the room and allow for more counter space. New laminate countertops mimic the look of stone, but cost a whole lot less. The glass mosaic-tile backsplash adds personality and color.

Before: Catchall RoomThey use this space as a catchall for all sorts of items, however, its location next to the kitchen would make it an ideal dining room.
After: Sophisticated Dining RoomThe worn carpet is replaced with new laminate flooring. It looks great, is durable, inexpensive and easy to install. The walls are painted olive green then the lower portion is wrapped in wainscoting to make the room seem taller. Poplar boards are used to create linear artwork along the longest wall. The rectangular design add dimension and makes the room appear longer.
