Modern Cottage Bath

See how a designer adds a fresh new look to a small dark bathroom.

  • When designer Justin Davis was first approached about remodeling this bathroom in a cottage-style home, he knew he had his hands full. Before the remodel, the bathroom was much smaller and darker, and the ceilings were quite a bit lower. With a higher ceiling and a wall that’s been opened up, this once minimalist space is now a bright, airy retreat.
  • Milk-glass windows have been installed above the toilet and in the shower area. A large skylight brings in much-needed natural light, and the clear glass shower adds to the wide-open feel of the space. To warm up the walls, shiplap redwood has been hung behind the tub. Subway tile is used in the shower and next to the vanity.
  • The free-standing tub gets filled with a waterblade-style faucet, providing an elegant waterfall effect. The element that really ties the whole room together is the polished jade and onyx flooring. Its soft, translucent quality reflects a lot of light and makes the room feel open and bigger than it actually is.
  • Like the tub, the free-standing double-sink vanity is also equipped with waterfall faucets. The contemporary-style cabinetry and hardware provide ample storage for the homeowners.
