Change the World: Atlanta

What's there:

The house at 1406 Desoto Avenue in Atlanta is located in a federally designated "renewal community" where families and businesses are given tax incentives to help strengthen the community. The program at the Desoto House helps veterans with personal renewal, safely housing six veterans in a cooperative environment designed to aid in their transition to civilian life. Offering more stability than a shelter or halfway house, the Desoto House provides affordable housing and support services all under one roof. In addition to participating in education and counseling programs, residents share daily chores, look after each other's children and eat dinner together. The caring, connected and communal environment serves to assist returning veterans in making holistic lifestyle changes through this supportive living arrangement.

What's needed:

Built in 1920, the Desoto House needs:

  • Upgrade of the sprinkler system; the existing system no longer meets fire-code standards for safety.
  • Replacement and repair of aging windows and crumbling ceilings to increase the home's energy efficiency and safety.
  • Fresh paint to help residents feel more at home.
