HGTV Showdown 304: Kitchen Challenge

Vern Yip and Anthony Gilardi team up to take on Angelo Surmelis and James Lunday to see who can best combine a small kitchen and adjacent mudroom to create a stylish and open chef's dream.

  • Before: The McCurdys' kitchen and adjacent mud room is short on style but big on potential. They'd like to remove the wall separating the two spaces to create an open, traditional-style kitchen with plenty of storage and counter space.
  • Runner-Up After: Angelo and James eliminated the wall separating the two rooms to create a large eat-in kitchen with hand-scraped hardwood floors, stainless-steel appliances and glass-front buffets that provide handy storage.
  • Runner-Up After: Rather than demolishing the kitchen, Angelo gives the existing cabinets a contemporary facelift with warm, chocolate-brown paint and frosted glass inserts. A travertine and glass mosaic tile backsplash and natural stone countertop complete the updated look.
  • Runner-Up After: Angelo chose an expandable table that could be used to entertain groups large or small. The table, located adjacent to the kitchen, also provides an additional work surface for food prep.
  • Winning Design After: Vern and Anthony wowed the homeowners with their reimagined layout and traditional yet bold look. The dividing wall and existing cabinets were demolished to make way for new, richly stained cabinets that better use the available space.
  • Winning Design After: The butcher-block island, with built-in sink and dishwasher provides a handy place for prepping food or cleaning up after meals. The island's placement creates an ideal work triangle between the sink, stove and refrigerator.
  • Winning Design After: Vern added real wow factor to the kitchen with the black-and-white Italian mosaic backsplash and composite granite and glass countertop. New and richly stained cabinets perfectly match the homeowners' request for traditional style.
  • Winning Design After: Vern combined two shades of orange roses for a simple, chic and classic centerpiece. © 2010 Scripps Networks, L.L.C. All rights reserved
