HGTV Showdown: Backyard Battle

Lisa LaPorta and Carmen De La Paz team up to take on Taniya Nayak and Steve Watson to see who can transform a barren backyard into an outdoor oasis in only five hours.

  • Before: Homeowners Megan and Kevin Annis would like to see their underused backyard turned into a relaxing get-away and the perfect spot to entertain. They'd like: a beefed-up grilling area, less grass to maintain and a water feature.
  • Runner-Up After: Taniya and Steve's completed design features a secluded seating area under the pergola, flagstone pathway and wooden planters with built-in benches.
  • Runner-Up After: Gauzy draperies give this seating area a secluded feel while punches of orange and tropical prints keep the design fresh.
  • Runner-Up After: Steve created a custom water feature by placing terra-cotta basins on graduated-height wooden stands which had been sprayed with a faux-stone finish. He achieved a great look but working on these took up a lot of the team's time.
  • Winning Design After: Lisa and Carmen pulled out all the stops to give the homeowners a backyard that is ready to party. They dismantled then rebuilt the existing pergola to create enough covered space for an outdoor kitchen with an adjacent dining room and cozy seating area.
  • Winning Design After: Always a stager at heart, Lisa visited the on-set caterer for fresh steaks, burgers and corn on the cob to accessorize the grill area.
  • Winning Design After: A weather-resistant fireplace provides an anchoring focal point for the outdoor living room.
  • Winning Design After: An elegant three-tiered fountain fulfills the homeowners' wish for a water feature and adds the musical sound of falling water to this outdoor oasis. © 2010 Scripps Networks, L.L.C. All rights reserved
