During and After Photos: The Yao Family

In the first episode of HGTV's $250,000 Challenge, contestants Dwight and Grace Yao transform their living room into an adult- and child-friendly, cheerful space.

  • Dwight applies the first coat of primer paint to the walls in the living room.
  • The color palette for the couple’s room features light brown and ruby red, Grace’s favorite color. “I think the colors that we chose fit both of our styles,” Grace adds.
  • Carpenter Steve Watson sands the custom bench that will serve as a window seat in the redecorated living room. With a hinged lid, the seat doubles as a toy box.
  • Dwight and Grace discuss their plan for redecorating the room and repurposing a metal coat rack with guest designer Kim Myles.
  • Show host Drew Lachey stops by to help carpenter Steve Watson and Dwight with construction projects.
  • Drew chips in to paint the built-in wall unit that carpenter Steve Watson constructed.
  • The metal coat rack, transformed into modern wall art, is assembled by Dwight.
  • Dwight puts the finishing touches on a shipment of contemporary furnishings the couple chose to decorate their new living space.
  • Grace assembles and frames her favorite family photos, which will serve as decorative accessories.
  • Grace organizes drapery rods in preparation for decorating the room.
  • Dwight and Steve take measurements for the built-in wall unit and window seat.
  • Window seats, which double as storage units, are covered with a colorful collection of pillows.
  • Fresh flowers and family photos soften the kid-friendly space.
  • The Yaos placed the built-in entertainment center against a ruby-red accent wall to serve as the room’s focal point.
  • Guest designer Kim Myles was disappointed by the couple’s repurposed decor item.
