Modern Style for Classic Rooms

In Design Star 3, for their second challenge, the eight remaining designers tackled four identical living rooms in a historic Nashville mansion. With 26 hours and a $5,000 budget, they had to make their space stand out.

Go Big and Bold

Pulled together, tailored and masculine are the words that come to mind when describing this successful transformation by Matt and Michael. By limiting the color palette to grays, blacks and whites with a powerful hint of red, these two competitors demonstrate that making fewer and bigger statements is a smart way to dramatically transform a space in a limited amount of time. Furniture with clean and simple lines adds to the elegance of the room and balances nicely with the more ornate detailing. Painting the fireplace mantel white creates a severe contrast to the black walls, making the beautiful, pre-existing architectural details of the room very prominent. The incredible chandelier, the deep crown molding and, of course, the fireplace step forward instead of being lost against the horribly busy wallpaper that dominated the pre-transformation space. Even the sculpture sitting on top of the mantel, made from their bizarre yard sale finds, looks innovative and perfectly appropriate, illustrating the point that real design talent can manipulate almost anything to work in a room.
