Before: Not Ready for Prime TimeKate Mayer's new house has the perfect setup for entertaining and she's ready to take the party outdoors. The problem is she has a beautiful deck and gazebo that would be great for parties but they desperately needs some comfy furniture, lighting and lots of panache.
With the help of host Joan Steffend, carpenter Jeff Meyer, and less than $500, designer Todd Pinzuti turned the dull gazebo into a tropical backyard getaway.
After: Vibrant Tropical GetawayPainting the inside of the gazebo was not an option because Kate wanted to leave the wood natural. So, Todd created upholstered panels, like wainscoting to fit underneath the windows. The plywood is simply wrapped in fabric, so the panels can easily be taken down and stored away come wintertime. Three palm-patterned shower curtains are cut into six pieces to create waterproof window treatments.

DaybedFour old chairs, lumber, fabric and burlap come together to make a cozy daybed. Two chairs are attached side by side to make the two ends of the bed. Then a wooden frame is built to connect both sets of chairs. Plywood is upholstered for the bed then a bedskirt is crafted from burlap. Add a few colorful pillows and the homeowner has a great little spot for outdoor naps.

Table and ChairsTwo more matching chairs are updated by crafting basket weave seats embellished with upholstery tacks and hot-pink ribbon. Todd gives the small dining table a unique weatherproof top. First he adheres burlap to the tabletop. Then he spreads two quarts of water-soluble polyurethane over the surface with a rubber spatula. When dry, the hard surface is waterproof and shiny.

Deck FurnitureLeftover fabric from the daybed project is used to re-cover the cushions. A palm leaf is laid on top the cushions to act as a stencil then spray painted to make a tropical design. Kate's accent table is given new life with a little green paint. Bamboo mats are laid as a rug to anchor the seating area and additional mats are placed along the walkway leading into the gazebo. More shower curtains are used to dress up the outside of the gazebo with an elegant flair.

Margarita ChandelierThe homeowner really wanted lighting in her outdoor makeover. So, electric was run to the gazebo and a unique chandelier is made to illuminate the gazebo. Colorful acrylic glassware is strung from a light cord and attached together with cable ties. The stem is cut off the one cup that houses the light bulb.
