Blank CanvasNatalie and Rusty Davis want to makeover their parents' empty backyard. To create a space where the family can hang out, landscape designer Matt Akabane incorporates an old world charm with a flagstone patio, custom benches and fire pit.
Rusty and Natalie Davis love their childhood home, where their parents still live. They recently finished remodeling the home and now it's time to update the backyard. Since the small yard is full of dirt and old grass, the kids want to transform the space with a new lawn and plenty of room for entertaining.
Full of ColorUsing dark woods, colorful plants and plenty of seating, landscape designer Matt Akabane creates an old world garden for the Davis family. The new pergola encompasses the sitting area, which features a fire pit and four stools built with recycled wood. A decomposed granite circular path surrounds the flagstone patio leading to the different areas of the yard. Irish moss around the flagstone patio adds color and softens the space.
Empty YardThe family needs more livable space where they can relax and entertain. In addition, Natalie wants to incorporate a lot color in the barren landscape, while Rusty's main concern is covering the ugly concrete wall. They would also like to keep the area low maintenance for their parents.
Peaceful DestinationThe formerly empty yard is transformed into a relaxing destination filled with unique areas and plenty of colorful plants. Two geometric fountains on opposite sides of the yard add balance and a nice flow to the garden. Hanging vines drape the retaining walls and frame the yard, while Italian cypresses camouflage the concrete wall.
