California gold piece next to a quarter
Pennsylvanian Ted Chylack is cashing in on the highly collectible world of coins. His extensive collection, which he has been building since his childhood, includes a rare 1853 half-dollar, an 1851 three-cent piece and California gold pieces.

His two children have been inspired to begin their own collections, and together the entire family attends collectors' conventions, where he found his favorite coin, an 1872 three-dollar gold piece. He and his family will definitely be rolling in money for years to come.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your very own collection:

  • State quarters released in 1999 are becoming more valuable. Those from New Jersey, Georgia and Connecticut are worth about 65 cents, while a Delaware state quarter is worth about $1.20.

  • Susan B. Anthony dollars were only produced from 1979 to 1981. A Susan B. Anthony from 1979 can be worth anywhere from $3 to 45 dollars, and a type II from 1979 can be worth up to $135.

  • Look for coins that were made in the early days of the U.S. mint and coins that are no longer in circulation. Only 20,000 half-cent pieces were made in 1802. If you find the genuine article, these coins can be worth $700 each.
