Figure D
Host Kathi Cardinalli shows how to create an art-deco touch of style with a homemade room screen.

Materials:

2' x 5' room-screen frames
acrylic sheet
acrylic cutter (The one the guest used was from Olfa.)
straight edge
safety glasses
painter's tape
narrow tape
frosted spray
hot glue gun
double hinges
small drawing square

Steps:

  1. Get a 2- by-5-foot room-screen frame at a home center. One with a small picture on top and a mirror on the bottom is ideal (figure A).

  2. Remove the glass, art and other elements of the framed pieces, leaving you with just the frame.

  3. Get pieces of acrylic from a craft or glass store.

  4. Cut the acrylic to fit with an acrylic cutter and a straight edge (figure B). Don't forget to wear safety glasses.

  5. Use painter's tape and narrow tape to create a geometric design on the acrylic (figure C). Spray with frosted spray.

  6. Remove the tape after the spray dries.

  7. Put the acrylic in the frame and hold in with hot glue (figure D). The sprayed side of the acrylic goes toward the back.

  8. Hinge two or more frames together with double hinges that allow the screen components to bend in either direction.
