This 1970s contemporary home situated in a Portland, Oregon, suburb is typical of many woodland houses built in the Pacific Northwest. The downside is its dark color gives it a dreary outlook in this rainy climate, so architectural firm Giulietti and Associates gave this home a lighter outlook by adding a touch of light-gray stain and some craftsman-style updates.

They played up the assets of the craftsman-style deck with a bold new portico, tying in the large square beams to the shape of the deck posts.

The second-story overhang has been masked with a shallow shed roof that balances the overall look of the facade and gives the first story more weight and prominence.

The opaque and forbidding slate of the porch and the front door have been replaced with a new door in the craftsman-style with three frosted windows. The look is light and airy and works well with the new wooden steps.

The 1970s-style frosted glass globes have been substituted with boxy craftsman-style lamps. This dramatic transformation turned a wallflower into a real stunner.
