Landscape architect D.J. Johns begins his transformation with the house itself.

He replaces the original cracked and peeling wood-frame windows with multipaned windows that give the house a cozier, more inviting look. A visually receding dark blue front door is removed, and Johns installs a traditional white-paneled door with two small decorative-leaded glass windows that help draw the eye toward the entry.

Turning his attention to the steep front yard, he divides the yard into two areas, separated by a curved stucco retaining wall. The top of the yard slopes gently downward and is planted with a row of pear trees and other plant material. The bottom portion of the yard is now wide enough to serve as a front patio and gracious entry area.

Johns continues his transformation of this home by making the approach to the house more inviting. He replaces the old concrete path with a gracefully curved pathway in colored and lightly textured concrete that connects the new lower patio with the street and driveway. Finally, he completes this transformation with new hardware and lighting around the front door.
