Figure B
Decorator Kelly Roland Warren points out a creative way to give new life to an old bed--in the form of a bench.

Materials:

old wooden twin bed headboard and footboard
saw
oil soap
sandpaper
putty knife
putty
piece of bench-seat-size wood (possibly a 1-inch x 12-inch, depending on the size of the bench)
wood screws
drill
screwdriver bits
2" foam
fabric for bench seat

Steps:

  1. Cut off the legs of the footboard with a saw. Clean the wood with oil soap, and sand if necessary.

  2. Use a putty knife to fill rail slots with putty (figure A).

  3. Invert the footboard so the posts become legs.

  4. Put a bench-seat-size piece of wood on the top of the headboard.

  5. Measure the space between the bench legs, and cut one of the previously removed bottom legs to fit (figure B). Attach by using a long wood screw.

  6. Use an attractive piece of board that is cut to size as the bench seat.

  7. Another option is to pull the fabric over a 2-inch piece of foam covering the board and staple that to the back/bottom.
