Kitchen Gadgets

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-253 -- More Projects »
Mary Hunt, author of Cheapskate Monthly, offers alternatives to buying expensive kitchen gadgets. She shows how to do the same job using a paintbrush, wooden dowel , tiles and a detergent's measuring cup, which also saves money.

Kitchen Gadget Alternatives:

  • Replace a rolling pin with a wooden dowel about 18 inches long from a lumber yard.

  • Use unglazed terracotta tiles as a substitute for a baking stone.

  • A regular paintbrush works just as well as a pastry basting brush.

  • Use a whisk as a pastry blender.

  • Use a detergent cap (boil or put through dishwasher) instead of a measuring cup. You can also use it as a biscuit cutter.

  • Instead of buying a spaghetti measurer, use a film can. If the spaghetti is measured by filling the canister, the pasta, when cooked, serves two.
