Garden Prep and Cleanup

TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-203 -- More Projects »
Mary Ellen demonstrates various tips for preparing and cleaning up in the garden.

  • Wear a black apron (preferably with pockets), black socks and several pairs of cotton gloves along with latex gloves to protect the hands.

  • Place garden shears and a trowel in the front pocket of the apron where they'll be handy. This will also be helpful in keeping clothes clean and free from dirt. All these staples can be kept in the garage and cleaned periodically.

  • To make washing up easier, coat hands with a hand lotion or udder cream and place soap under fingernails before putting on the latex gloves.

  • Clip gloves together with a clothespin and keep them in an area close to the gardening supplies.

  • To avoid tracking dirt into the house, get a pair of old, oversized men's slippers. Simply slip on over shoes when it's time to run in for a drink of water or to answer the phone.

  • To guard against unwanted vapors and poisonous chemicals when working with fertilizers, wear protective gloves and if possible a surgical mask.
