Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-215 -- More Projects »
Author Graham Haley has great ideas on cutting the amount of time that it takes to clean copper and silver. He shows how using aluminum foil and water softener can clean tarnished silver in about 10 seconds. He also shares tips for cleaning rusty pots, brass and copper.

Helpful Tips:

To clean tarnished silverware
--Run a quart of hot water into the sink. Dissolve one tablespoon of washing soda (or laundry water softener) and one tablespoon of salt into the water. Place a sheet of aluminum foil on the bottom of the sink and place your tarnished silverware in the mix. Silver that is touching the foil and covered with water should become clean in 10 seconds.

To clean copper pots--Cut a lemon in half and dip it into table salt. Rub the lemon on the pot to make the grime disappear. (Vinegar works in place of a lemon.)

To clean brass--Shine brass items with Worcestershire sauce. Dip a damp rag or old toothbrush into the sauce and rub the brass. Wipe off and then buff with a clean, dry cloth. (Toothpaste will also work.)

To clean rusty baking dishes--Rust can be removed from baking dishes by scrubbing with a raw potato (halved) and any laundry detergent. (Always wear rubber gloves when working with detergents.)
