Organization expert Tom Nevermann shows how to get rid of clutter and make money by having a garage sale. He offers tips on advertising, displaying and pricing wares.
Garage sale tips:
- Place an advertisement in the local paper mentioning date, time and place.
- On signs for the garage sale, make the information large, clear and visible. Make sure the sign mentions the sale, date, time, address and an arrow pointing in the right direction.
- Check with the city for necessary permits for posting signs, and try to start directions from a busy intersection nearby.
- Do anything you can to attract attention to the sale by flying balloons and/or flags. Put nicer items, such as furniture, near the street to peak the interest of passersby.
- Offer coffee, water and even food like bagels or doughnuts to encourage prolonged browsing.
- Have your kids pick toys that they no longer use to include in the sale.
- If using labels to price items, write price clearly and make them easy to find. If the sale is a multi-family event, different colored labels will help to keep the money straight. Having a cashier will also help with money management, but if not possible, use a fanny pack to carry money around.
- Donate the leftover items to charity rather than returning them to your house. Most charities will come to your home at the end of the sale to collect the items, but if they won't, take the items to them.
