Figure A--At this magnificent estate Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in 1882. The manor would be his home his entire life. Here, he developed the confidence and compassion to lead the nation through the Great Depression and the second World War.

Although he was known as a champion of the common man, Roosevelt was born into a world of privilege. This home, formerly known as Springwood, was called Hyde Park by his parents, James and Sara, after the town in which they lived.

Figure B--At Hyde Park, Roosevelt was adored, but he was not coddled. His bedroom was fairly plain, though his parents did special order this extra-long brass bed for their tall son.

Figure C--On November 8, 1932, Franklin Roosevelt fulfilled his dream. In the dining room, he listened to election returns in an oak chair carved with roses from the Roosevelt family crest--three roses and three feathers. Here he learned he had been elected president of the United States. As he guided the nation through some of its most difficult hours, he often returned to the one place that could refuel his spirit--Hyde Park.

Figure D--During the 12 years of his presidency, Roosevelt's stately home sat unusually empty, although he visited as often as he could. When he was there, he could often be found in the magnificent living room. Housing more than 14,000 books, the room was a monument to his family. The family crest was carved into the molding.

Figure E--The refinement and warmth of the living room made it the perfect place for the president to entertain visitors. European royalty also visited, but they required a little more formality. They were escorted to the music room, which featured Dresden porcelain candelabras. Chintz draperies and upholstery were installed in 1939 for the visit of the king and queen of England.

Figure F--Perhaps the most familiar room to America was also the newest to Hyde Park. This office, built next door to the library, was where President Roosevelt delivered many of the famous Fireside Chat radio addresses.
