The home features ceramic tiles, graceful columns and a fountain in the courtyard. Inside, the villa contains an eclectic mix of European antiques, Western-flavored accents and Phillips' personal collection of Spanish weapons.

One of the best features of the villa is the beautiful New Mexico location (figure A). Phillips loved to spend the long, sunny days ranching and fishing under the crystal blue skies. Handpainted ceiling beams, or vigas, recall the early Spanish architecture of the Southwest (figure B). Villa Philmonte's interior furthers the Southwestern motif, with architectural touches, decorations and crafts.

Phllips decorated the "New Mexico" room with his collection of southwestern artifacts, including Pueblo pottery and Navajo blankets.

The trophy room featured all the trappings a Western outdoorsman would need, and Phillips also used it as an informal office.

Phillips wanted others to enjoy this Western palace, so in 1951, he donated the house and more than 126,000 acres of land to the Boy Scouts of America. Today Phillips' summer home is home to the Philmont Scout Ranch.
