East Brother

This historic island lighthouse with its Victorian structure was nearly lost in the 1970s, when the Coast Guard automated it. Adetermined local effort saved the lighthouse, though, which sets on a 3/4-acre island in the straits between the San Francisco and San Pablo bays.

Figure A--As the West was settled and the San Francisco Bay area became an important shipping route, lighthouses were needed to guide mariners to safety. The East Brother Light Station was completed in 1874 off Port Richmond, California. A remote island station, a rowboat was the only way to access East Brother in the early days.

Figure B--Beautiful views abound from nearly anyplace on the island, but especially from the tower that is located within the main structure.

Figure C--Today the lighthouse is a beautifully restored Victorian bed-and-breakfast that is operated by the not-for-profit East Brother Light Station, Inc. Capt. Gary Herdlicka and his wife, Ann Selover, are the innkeepers and care for the hundreds of guests who stay at East Brother each year to sample a bit of bay-area history.
