Hendricks Head

Special Presentation : Episode LIH-S -- More Projects »
As Alabama natives, Luanne and Ben Russell never thought they'd be stewards of a lighthouse along Maine's ruggedly beautiful coast, but the couple has extensively renovated Hendricks Head and now enjoys spending their summers in a unique home with beautiful ocean views. Ben is especially proud that a family of ospreys have made their nest in the lighthouse's restored fog bell tower.

Figure C
Figure A--Although Alabama is a long way from the coast of Maine, Ben Russell takes his role as lighthouse keeper seriously and even climbed the tower one stormy night to fire up the old kerosene light when the electricity was knocked out.

Figure B--The Russells spent years restoring their lighthouse summer home. Many of the interior walls were damaged and removed, but they took advantage of this and left a generous amount of open space to provide a light, airy feeling and open up the spectacular ocean views.

Figure C--Ben Russell said when he rebuilt the fog bell tower he included a top framework to make it an accommodating nesting site for ospreys. The Russells had to wait a few years, but finally a family of ospreys made their home in the tower and have since raised three generations in the nest.
