  • Two items should always be within easy reach--one for comfort and one for entertainment. Comfort items are such things as lip balm, skin lotion or sunglasses. Entertainment items can be books, crossword puzzles or handheld games.

  • When children are along on the trip, it's a good idea to purchase a piece of luggage that is referred to as a backseat organizer (figure A). This piece fits over the back seat of a vehicle and allows easy access to numerous items. Heaviest items should be stored on the bottom.

  • Use an old shirt as an organizer. Along with the pockets that are already there, add some iron-on patches of different sizes to serve as additional pockets (figure B). Slit the sides so that the shirt fits over a car seat, then secure it with a rubber bands looped through the buttonholes and around the buttons.

  • Keep necessity items close at hand in a large zippered plastic bag. Things to include here are portable music, a toothbrush, mirror, book, comb or brush. Neck and eye pillows also help the trip go faster.
