Shopping for a Vacuum
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-1213 -- More Projects »
Field shopper Gigi Jensen points out things to look for when buying a vacuum.
- Upright vacuum cleaners are best for wall-to-wall carpeting. More weight over the powerhead improves cleaning.
Canister vacuums (figure A) that come with a hose and attachments are best for drapes, upholstery, areas underneath furniture and any other hard-to-reach places.Consider how often the bag needs to be changed. If the bag has to be changed too often, this is a variable cost that can rise rather quickly. Try to find a model that has a large capacity and this will save you money in the long run. There are also bagless vacuums (figure B) that filter dust just as well as bag equipped models. However, when you empty the cleaner enough dust is released to make wearing a mask a consideration.
Most vacuums are rated at 12 amps (figure C), but that has little to do with their amount of suction. Machines with metal fan blades and fans are going to have better suction and last longer. If you are allergic to dust, be sure to purchase a vacuum with a good filter that traps all the excess dust.
Some features to look for are attachments that include crevice and upholstery tools (figure D). Most vacuums also include extension wands for reaching high places. A full-bag alert is another handy feature, since an overstuffed bag impairs a vacuum's ability to clean.A self-propelled vacuum is good for an older person who may have a harder time pushing a vacuum. It can make pushing easy, but it can also make them heavier.Another worthwhile feature is the beater-brush adjustment. This will improve cleaning by letting you match the vacuum's height to the carpet pile more effectively than machines that adjust automatically. It will also adjust for vacuuming hardwood floors.Make sure to take the vacuum for a spin around the store. See how easy it is to maneuver around corners. This also allows you to judge a model's noise level, ease of height adjustment and overall fit and finish. When shopping for vacuums, remember that the most expensive model is not necessarily the best one. Watch for sales and be thorough in comparison shopping.
