Pair black leather pants with a traditional, understated sweater set on top for an easy office look.
Put more leather fashions into your lifestyle with tips from style expert Kate Rice.

  • Leather is no longer just for evenings or special occasions; it can be worn every day.

  • Look for pieces that have classic styling and can be worn year after year.

  • Buy pieces that are lined and not too fitted in dark colors, especially black.

  • A black leather jacket can be worn to work or out on the town. It should be fitted, but not too fitted--the look is of a blazer rather than an overcoat.

  • A faux suede jacket is a less expensive alternative to the real thing. Look for classic styling and avoid trendy fringe, distressing or dark stitching.

  • Black leather pants can now be worn to the office. Just make sure you wear something with them that covers you up a little bit, like a tunic-length sweater set. Look for a boot-cut leg, and don’t buy them too fitted.

  • When trying out a black leather skirt, try a knee-length hemline rather than a mini, and avoid a very fitted style for the office. Pair with dark denim for a great casual look.

  • Leather accessories--If you don’t want to spend money on a big-ticket leather item, try adding leather accessories like a purse, boots or hat for a touch of style. You can mix suede and leather in the same outfit as long as they are the same color. Remember, though, that suede is considered a fall and winter leather.
