- When organizing a bedroom first come up with a vision for the room. Ask yourself the following questions:
Is it only going to be a peaceful retreat from the demands of the outside world and family?
Do you want it to be a place that stimulates your creative juices?
Do you need an extra desk or storage space in the room?
- Next, think of what sites or sounds make you feel comfortable. For example, if splashing in the ocean makes you feel at peace, then consider painting your walls a light color that reminds you of the beach.
- The furniture style is also an important consideration. It should be both functional and eye appealing.
- To stop clutter from entering the bedroom, establish a launching pad (basket, bowl or other type of container) near the garage or the door where you enter your home most frequently. Place things like keys, sunglasses and spare change here. If the "pad" is large enough, you could also put library books, videos to be returned and dry cleaning in this spot.
- Designate a basket for the mail, along with a wastebasket and shredder, for the initial sort of the mail. Place it near the door. Eliminating the junk mail at the door keeps it from landing on the kitchen counter or on the bed. Only pertinent letters and bills should make it the desk or bill-paying area.
- If photos are part of the clutter problem, here is an idea for handling them: Sort the photos by family member, event or year and then divide them into colorful baskets or boxes that are only large enough to place in one scrapbook. Be sure to include scrapbooking supplies in your project basket--things like scissors, tape, and embellishments. Try to keep in mind that the scrapbook doesn't have to be perfect--the memories the important thing, not the way you package them..
- If you have a workspace in your bedroom, have a message center and calendar on it to simplify planning.
- Vertical wall shelves are a great way to store bins and baskets because they free up valuable floor space.
- If you have room, create a reading nook with a comfy chair and lamp. Try to keep less than three magazines and one current book in that area.
