Professional organizer Sally Allen provides tips for keeping jewelry neat and tangle-free.

  • The first step is to sort and purge. Theatre groups love to get old jewelry that would otherwise be tossed out.

  • Keep jewelry in a shallow drawer. Use bracelet boxes and lids (figure A) to create compartments for jewelry. Keep like pieces of jewelry together. For example, group matching necklace and earrings in the same spot.

  • Mug racks or tie racks are great for hanging belts and necklaces (figure B).

  • A plate drier, with its vertical arms, is great for storing rings and bracelets (figure C). Keep an attractive ring dish near the sink.

  • Create an earring frame by taking the back off a picture frame, stretching a piece of cross-stitch netting across it, and stapling it in. Earrings should hook easily into the spaces (figure D).

  • Use a favorite stuffed animal to store jewelry. Attach clip earrings to the ears, push pins into the body and hang bracelets around the arms. Try using this in a young girl’s room.
