Figure A
Home-accessories designer Mimi Basseri tells how to clean up junk drawers and art supplies.

  • To organize ribbons, you will need a shoebox or plastic box and a wooden dowel cut to the length of the box. Thread the wheels of ribbons on the dowel and set the dowel in the shoebox (figure A). Place a large rubber band around the outside of the box to keep the ribbons from unwinding.

  • Use a regular cutlery tray to organize things like crochet hooks, paintbrushes, pens and scissors.

  • To make a window-box container, first adhere foam blocks to the bottom of a window box with glue or double stick tape. Stick the handles of tools into the foam (figure B) so you can easily see the tool. Scissors should go in point first. This works well for large tools.

  • Store rolls of wrapping paper in a waste-paper basket.

  • Use an old hat box to store polyester stuffing.

  • Keep special papers in an accordion file.
