Sesame Seeds--Beyond the Bun

TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares some of her favorite tips and recipes for sesame seeds.

  • Keep sesame seeds fresh by placing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

  • To bring out the flavor of sesame seeds simple toast them in a dry skillet over medium heat.

  • Season spinach with sesame seeds and a dash of balsamic vinegar.

  • Season green beans with a tablespoon of butter, two tablespoons soy sauce and toss with a tablespoon of sesame seeds.

  • Bread chicken with sesame seeds.

  • Roll peanut butter cookies in sesame seeds before you bake them. You do not need to pre-toast sesame seeds before placing over baked goods the oven will toast them.

  • Garnish coleslaw with sesame seeds.

  • A great topping for plain yogurt is a few mandarin oranges with a sprinkle of sesame seeds.

Tahini Sauce

Ingredients:

1/3 cups rice wine
2 Tbs. soy sauce
2 Tbs. water
2 Tbs. tahini (sesame paste)
1-1/2 tsp. ginger
1 clove garlic

Preparation:

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Use as a dip or in recipes.
