Figure A
Figure A--First find a suitable tray table and line it with a decorative napkin or place mat. Plan the layout of the tray, making sure that the tray is large enough to hold all the items. Set up the tray just as you would set a table, and use the best china, linen napkins and flatware.

Figure B
Figure B--Flowers in a vase are nice, but here are some other ideas for breakfast. Use an empty jam jar or a creamer as a vase and fill it with wildflowers.

Figure C
Figure C--Wrap silverware in a pretty napkin, and lay a single stem on top of the napkin, securing with a pretty ribbon. A variation of that is to tie up a simple bouquet with a decorative ribbon and lay it across the tray.

Figure E
Figure D--Some elegant ingredients that are also readily available at most local grocery stores can turn scrambled eggs into a luxurious treat. Pick up some smoked salmon, goat cheese and fresh dill and add them to scrambled eggs to create a dish as special as mom.

Figure E--For a lighter treat, make an exotic fruit plate with colorful fruits like mangos, kiwi, papayas or guava.

Figure F
Figure F--If a tray's not available, make mom a breakfast basket. Fill the bottom of a large basket with folded newspapers, cover the papers with an attractive napkin and arrange some bottled juice and maybe a breakfast pastry or two on the napkin. Cover the pastries with a glass cheese dome.

Other Ideas

  • Save time by premixing as many ingredients as possible. No breakfast in bed is complete without homemade muffins, so prepare the batter the night before, cover with plastic and simply put in the refrigerator until it's time to bake. Use a measuring cup with a lip to pour the batter into the muffin tin.

  • Have the muffin tin ready, too. Put the muffin cups in their places and put the tin back in the cupboard until morning.

  • Make a yogurt parfait to go along with the muffins. Combine yogurt, blueberries and sliced strawberries and serve in a glass goblet.

  • If scrambled eggs or omelets are on the breakfast menu, premix the eggs and milk the night before. Avoid seasoning the eggs before cooking, though. Salt may cause the eggs to curdle if added too far in advance. Also, wait to add omelet ingredients such as cheese, vegetables or meats because they could affect the consistency of the cooked eggs if added too early.

  • If mom's a fan of spicy foods, make her some huevos rancheros by adding a dollop of refried beans, sour cream, salsa and a little fresh cilantro to her eggs. Thinly sliced deli ham also makes a great addition.

  • Last but not least, give mom the best present of all by leaving the kitchen even cleaner than it was before breakfast.
