Make lists for what needs to be cleaned and when. Make a sticky note for each task and put them on a clipboard (as shown), or hang them on the inside of a cupboard with hook-and-loop fastener.
Organizing expert Pam Hix explains how to gear up for cleaning.

  • Use a calendar to schedule out each month. That way you know what needs to be done when and your family knows what they should be cleaning.

  • Put on music or background noise to keep you motivated while cleaning. Books on tape are good, too. Avoid the television, though because it can be distracting.

  • To help you stay on task, time yourself. Decide how long you will spend on each room, set the timer, then leave when it goes off.

  • Tote along all of your cleaning supplies in a large bucket while you work from room to room. That way you won't have to keep returning for supplies.

  • Put an empty bin or plastic cup inside your bucket for collecting misplaced items. You don't want to waste time running things back to their proper place.

  • Work your way around a room, starting from the top and working your way down to the floor, finishing with sweeping your way out of the room.

  • Set aside time for those larger projects like organizing a photo album. Also, don't expect to get it all done in one day. A little at a time still adds up.
