Fill a regular surface hole just fill with a putty stick, then use a stain stick to correct the color.
Master upholsterer Dave Ross explains how to refinish old and damaged wooden furniture.

  • To repair a hole in detail work, use auto-body putty. Once it has hardened, you will be able to shape it with a sharp blade.

  • Easily repair an area in which the finish is bubbling or crumbling off by first sanding off the old stain, then applying lacquer thinner to a rag and cleaning the surface. Once clean, you can restrain it by spraying an aerosol stain onto a rag and wiping that over the area. This technique is also good for nooks and small areas.

  • After you have stained it, you will want to protect it with a varnish.

  • Wax crayons can also be used as a make shift putty if you can't match the color with store-bought ones.
