Antiques expert Jocelyn Bagge suggest new ways to use old items as decorative and functional pieces around the home.
- Old items such as marble slabs, shutters, grate covers and wrought-iron fixtures can make interesting and unique home-decorating items.
- Make a small table by placing a grate cover on a table bottom and covering it with a piece of glass (see photo).
- Smaller grates can be used as potholders, bases for planters or can just be arranged on the wall to form an interesting, textured display.
- Take a rectangular marble slab and place it on two overturned flowerpots or concrete blocks to make a lovely garden bench or table.
- A marble slab also makes a great top for a coffee table or end table.
- Use a smaller piece of marble as a work surface in the kitchen. Pastry dough is much easier to work with when rolled out on a piece of chilled marble.
- Hang old shutters on the wall, or attach two or three large shutters together to create a room divider.
- Place a shutter on top of two large galvanized tin buckets and top it with a piece of glass to make an interesting coffee table.
- Attach an old wrought-iron gate to the wall, and slide the bed up against it to make a unique headboard. Spray the gate with a clear flat lacquer first to guard against rust.
- Anchor a wrought-iron gate securely to the wall and use it as a decorative wall hanging.
- Sink the gates into the garden to serve as flowerbed dividers.
- Set a tall gate against the side of the house and use it as a trellis.
