  • When trying out a new paint color in your house look at the color various choices at different times of day. They change hues throughout the day. It is also a good idea to invest in a quart of a few colors you like (figure A). Paint a strip of color by the woodwork, by special fabrics, or near a brick fireplace, for example. You want your new color to complement all of these things.

  • Keep in mind that stores have fluorescent lighting, making your paints appear greener than they are in daylight. You can also paint the colors on a piece of dry wall and position it throughout the room in your house. Some paint manufactures offer sample packets (figure B) that can be very economical.

  • Choose a color from your inspiration fabric that is a little unexpected. For example, if you are using a red plaid with a yellow thread running through it, consider painting your walls a bright yellow (figure C).

  • Keep a notebook, file, or zipper bag full of your color chips and fabric samples (figure D). Keep it in the car at all times. You may find that perfect piece when you least expect it. Also, invest in a very small measuring tape and carry it with you at all times. This way you can measure that great picture, mirror or table you may happen upon.

  • If you are trying to match fabrics to a large rug, get a paint color fan and match each of the colors to the rug. Bring a picture of the rug with you when you are shopping to match the pattern (figure E).

  • Always bring a list of measurements with you.

  • Tear out pictures of styles you like from magazines and keep them in a binder (figure F) or envelope of some sort.

  • If you are having faux finishing done, have the artist make a sample board for you that you can carry around to use to match fabrics.
