Carpet squares are available in two styles, with a straight edge or a wavy pattern that fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Interior designer Sharon Hanby-Robie shows how easy it is to add permanent or temporary wall-to-wall carpeting with a new type of stick-on carpeting squares that won’t damage the surface underneath. It's a technique that is ideal for renters.

Materials:

graph paper
pencil
yardstick
tape measure (for calculating wall-to-wall measurements)
chalk marker
straight-edge razor for cutting the carpet
gloves for protection

Steps:

  1. Make sure the floor is dust free before you begin. Sweep and mop thoroughly so the carpet will stick to the surface.

  2. Lay out the pattern using either graph paper or a computer.

  3. Label the longest wall the "A" wall, and the adjacent wall the "B" wall. You want to have an even amount of space leftover all around the edges, with the pattern in the center.

  4. Use a tape measure to find the determined distance from the edge of the wall (10 inches was used for this project), and mark off a straight line in front of all four walls with the chalk.

  5. You might want to wear gloves once you start to lay the carpet.

  6. Begin by laying the carpet squares in the corner. Press down firmly with all your weight to install each square. They can easily be repositioned if you make a mistake.

  7. Push each square together snugly without creating a crown or bump at the seam-line.

  8. Lay a line down along wall A and then wall B.

  9. Fill in the remaining space, cutting squares to fit as needed.
