Figure A

  • Enlist the help of a handheld vacuum cleaner the next time you lose a contact lens. Just cut off the foot of an old pair of pantyhose and place it over the end of the vacuum, holding it in place with a rubber band. Turn it on and run over the area where you think the lens fell. The lens will adhere to the pantyhose (figure A).

  • Freshen musty drawers by placing an open stick of deodorant inside. Be sure it does not touch the clothing. This also works underneath a car seat.

Figure B
  • Eliminate the stench in smelly sneakers by pouring some clay kitty litter into a pair of ordinary socks and tying a knot in the ends (figure B). Slip the socks into the shoes and let them sit overnight to absorb moisture as well as odors.

  • Soothe sore muscles by putting together a homemade heat pad. All you need is a sock and rice. Fill the sock with rice and tie a knot in it. Place the rice in the microwave for 45 seconds, then put on sore areas. The heat will last for at least five to 10 minutes. Pantyhose will also work instead of a sock.

    Figure C
  • For an easy homemade ice pack, made some gelatin and fill a plastic bag with it (figure C). Place the bag in the freezer to get the gelatin really cold. Apply the bag to aches and pains. It will conform to any shape.
