Figure B

  • Model airplane glue is really only for model kits (figure A). It is actually not a glue but a solvent for dissolving styrene plastic to create a weld. Do not try to use this for anything but styrene.

  • Hot-glue guns are great for crafts (figure B). The glue is simple to use and sets quickly.

  • There are a couple of types of hot glue--low-melt and hot-melt. When using low-melt glue, make sure you have the proper low-heat gun or it will overheat the glue.

  • Low-melt glue is best for most crafts and is safer for children to use. Always have adult supervision when working with a hot-glue gun.

  • If you are gluing foam, make sure to use a low-temperature glue gun as well as low-melt glue.

Figure D
  • Yellow glue sticks for glue guns have more risen, which means they have a stronger bond. You can also purchase decorative glue for craft projects (figure C).

  • An instant-bond adhesive is a great way to fix broken ceramic items or small pieces of costume jewelry. Carefully apply the glue by squirting just a bit onto a piece of scrap paper. Dip a toothpick into the glue and apply the glue to the jewelry (figure D). Use a glue accelerator to quick-set the piece.

  • Use a thicker formula because it is easier to control. Also, use the catalyst for a true instant bond. Thick glue and catalyst are available at hobby shops.
