Install doorknob bumpers (above) or doorstops where you have doors that open into walls to avoid making a mark or eventually wearing a hole into the wall.
TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham gives helpful tips on protecting surfaces throughout your home.

  • Always use coasters on your tables.

  • The easiest way to remove water rings is with toothpaste.

  • Always use cutting boards, even when the manufacturer says you don't need to do so.

  • Place your plants on trivets, even when there is a saucer with the pot. Those can still leak.

  • Instead of blowing out candles, which could send the hot wax flying all over the table, put them out with a candle extinguisher. You could also place your hand in front of it and blow gently.

  • Place felt tabs on anything that might scratch a surface. You can buy these already cut or make your own.

  • When you shampoo your carpets, place old socks on the legs to prevent the legs from bleeding stain into the wet carpet.
