Figure C

Golfing expert Mike Grube points out basic golf tips to help you achieve the perfect swing.

  • First get a grip. Let the club come right across the fingers so that you can see three knuckles. Overlap the grip and wrap your hands around. Cover up the thumb until you see a little of the third knuckle (figure A).

  • Spacing your legs properly and good balance are key to a great golf stance. Bend from the hips, drop the arms down and bend your knees. Your hands should fall naturally in front of you when gripping the club--you shouldn't have to reach for it (figure B).

  • Start practicing with short swings. Your arms and the shaft of the club should form a "Y" (figure C). Swing the club slowly back and forth. Tee up the ball and practice with light swings.

  • Always wear sun block and a hat when you're out on the links. Also, dress in light-colored clothing, and keep some bug spray handy in case pests try to ruin your day.

  • Practice good golf etiquette, and always use good manners when out on the course. Yell "fore!" if your ball seems to be heading in the path of another golfer.

  • Golf is much more affordable than it used to be.

  • Practice at the driving range or play a par-three course as a beginner golfer. Private or group lessons are a great way to learn.
