Entertaining expert Susan Reese shows how to make creative invitations with ordinary items that are lying around the house. Examples are wallpaper scraps, material pieces, leftover paper and pieces of felt.

Invitations

Materials:

decorative paper
laser printer
chip board
craft knife
double-sided tape
textured paper
felt fabric
fabric glue
silk flowers
hot-glue gun

Steps:

  1. Write out your invitation and print the information on decorative paper with a laser printer. Utilize your copy center if you don't have a computer at home.

  2. Have chip board or stiff cardboard cut into dimensions of your choice at a copy center, or use a craft knife to cut your own.

Figure A
  • Fold the invitation paper around each chip board, much as you would when wrapping a present (figure A). Adhere the paper to the board with double-sided tape.

  • Cover the chip board by adhering textured paper (cut to size) with double-sided tape to the back of the invitation.

    Figure B
  • Make an envelope to hold each invitation by cutting out felt fabric. For a 6 x 6-inch invitation, use 16 x 7-inch dimensions for the material (figure B).

  • Fold the fabric into the shape of an envelope and secure with fabric glue (or a sewing machine).

  • Embellish the envelope by gluing on silk flowers. Mail each invitation in an oversized envelope.

  • For a neat variation on the invitation, use fabric instead of decorative paper around the chip board. Adhere blank paper to the fabric with the party information.
